When an individual decides to present themselves in court, they do not have to do every step on their own. They have the option of hiring an attorney to complete certain steps of the case. There are stages to each case. A lawsuit begins when a Plaintiff (the person suing) files a written Complaint. That Complaint has to be in a certain format and has to include specific information. Limited Scope representation allows a Plaintiff to hire an attorney to draft the complaint without hiring the attorney to represent them through the entire case. This allows the Plaintiff to save money on legal fees. This is only recommended if the Plainiff feels comfortable managing the remaining case. Other examples of limited scope would be hiring an attoney on a limited scope basis to draft an order, an agreement between parties, or even to represent them during a specific hearing. The representation agreement between the client and the attorney will specify the exact terms of the representation - outlining what is covered and what it not. Several resources are provided on this page to assist in your decision on whether you feel comfortable with self representation.
